The Ed.D. Leadership Program at San José State University prepares the next generation of leaders with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to understand the causes of inequitable outcomes in P-16 educational institutions. Students in this program are also simultaneously prepared to assess pedagogies, practices, policies, and curricula that hold the potential to improve the life chances of minoritized students.
We are committed to preparing collaborative, transformative leaders capable of building school systems free from oppression, injustice, and inequality as well as to closing the opportunity gap resulting in educational disparities and social inequalities.
Recent graduates of the EdD program have completed original research focusing on salient issues impacting schools, students, and communities across Silicon Valley, California and global contexts. Some of the dissertation studies include:
- Documenting the challenges families and schools face in addressing the issue of family homelessness across the South Bay region.
- Assessing whether online learning promotes student engagement, motivation, and mastery of course content.
- Evaluating whether afterschool programs promote the unique learning needs of refugee students.
- Illuminating whether spiritual practices can be a source of insight and guidance for school leaders on ethical issues.
- Gauging how Latinx K-16 students’ identities impact their schooling experiences and life chances.
- Unearthing whether the Local Control Accountability Plans (LCAPs) across California are eliminating educational disparities.
- Capturing whether professional development programs, teacher practices, school-community partnerships, and asset-based and culturally relevant pedagogical approaches improve educational outcomes for students.
- Documenting whether Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) hold the potential as leverage points for affecting teacher beliefs and practices regarding technology use.
- Pinpointing key facets that build relational trust between high school teachers and principals within a hierarchical role relationship in a public comprehensive high school district in Northern California.
- Highlighting whether school principals are capable of being instructional leaders in Title I schools.

The Need for the Ed.D. Program
There is a demonstrable need for Ed.D. programs for the state, and for the region. More than 8 in 10 California superintendents will be eligible for retirement in the next five years. In Santa Clara County alone, nearly 1,000 administrators serve 398 schools.
About SJSU's Ed.D. program
Who are our students?
Anticipated students are mid-career professionals. This includes principals, assistant-superintendents, superintendents, directors, teacher leaders, non-profits and educational foundations, among other professions.
What is the duration of the program?
The Ed.D. program is a 3-year (nine semester) doctoral program beginning in the summer semester. It is a cohort model with 15 students that meets as follows:
- 1st year summer intensive ― 3 classes meet 5 weeks (2-3 days/week Monday, Wednesday, Thursday OR Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday) on campus
- Fall and spring classes ― 1 evening per week (blended hybrid) and 2-4 weekends (Saturday, all day) per semester (2 classes)
- Second summer of program is the global experience ― 15 days out-of-country and combination of weekday, evening, or Saturday classes before global experience
Do students have faculty advisors?
Yes, doctoral advisors are assigned during the fall semester of year one of the program.
What is the program cost?
Anticipated costs for the 2019-20 academic year total $20,922/year plus a one-time $3,000 international travel fee.
Is financial aid available?
Yes, students may apply for scholarships, grants, and loans based on eligibility.
