Advising

There is general wide agreement on the value of faculty-student advisement. Many high
schools, and even some middle schools, have instituted advisement programs in the
hopes of providing clearer direction and greater human contact, while preventing students
from falling through the cracks. The goals of Faculty & Student advisement in the
Educational leadership Department are the same.
The course content alone in our two-year graduate course of study can be daunting.
Added to the course content is portfolio development, completion an Action Research
Project based on original study of an existing situation in the school setting, and
establishing and completing of field work goals for practical application of leadership
skills, and a student could become overwhelmed. The role of the field work adviser
is to minimize anxiety and to assist the student through the navigation of the two-year
process.
The relationship between the faculty adviser and the student has led to a low rate
of attrition in the program. Adviser and students build a level of mutual support
and commitment which are critical factors responsible for San Jose State's Educational
Leadership Department having one of the highest completion rates of students from
beginning to end. Advisers are all former school administrators and leaders. Advisers
meet regularly to calibrate high standards and expectations and to gauge consistent
standards of excellence. Data gleaned from student feedback consistently points to
Faculty-Student Advising as one of the pillars that makes the Educational Leadership
Program attractive and successful.
