Basic Skills Requirement

The California Education Code and Title 5 Regulations specify, in most cases, that applicants for a credential, certificate, or permit to serve in the public schools of California must verify basic skills proficiency before the credential, certificate, or permit will be issued. For Multiple and Single Subject Teaching Credential candidates, the basic skills requirement must be met prior to being assigned to daily responsibility for whole class instruction in student teaching or serving as an intern.

Credential candidates generally take the CBEST exam or the CSET: Writing Skills (Multiple Subject candidates) exam to meet the Basic Skills Requirement, however, there are alternate options for meeting the BSR. If you are choosing an alternate option, you are required to have it verified by a Credential Analyst in the Credential Services Offie in Sweeney Hall 106 before submitting your BSR with your admission application to the program.

Steps for BSR verification:

  1. Complete the BSR form with a copy of your official exam results. A credential anlayst will need to verify a true copy. The official exam results will be returned to you.  NOTE: If you hold a credential or permit issued by CTC which required verification of your BSR, you may submit a copy of the exam results (instead of official results) along with a copy of your CTC issued credential.
  2. Submit to Credential Services in SH 106 or email to credentials@sjsu.edu.
  3. You will be notified by email within 48 hours regarding the status of your BSR verification request.
