A Visit with Teachers in APEX

How did you get into teaching?

I worked in tutoring, after school groups, and day care centers forI worked in tutoring, after school groups, and day care centers for homeless children. My work outside of the educational system advocating for homeless students helped me realize the need for advocates within the educational system as well. My dedication to equal opportunity, equitable schooling and interest in working with children led me to pursue teaching as a career.

-Angela Campos, Teacher

Why did you choose the APEX program?

It is proven affective. For Teach For America teachers they take into consideration our summer curriculum. They are also great at recognizing the challenge of being a new teacher who is teaching full time - while also taking classes. Best of all, as a Program Director I can honestly say that our teachers in the APEX program have the most impressive learning curve, are making significant gains in student achievement, and best of all, have a wonderful perspective on teaching. They may be exhausted at times, but they are always doing amazing work -- thanks in large part to APEX.

What have you learned from the APEX program?

The APEX program has definitely enabled me to become a much more powerful teacher. I have learned various teaching strategies, awesome lessons, ideas, and have had the opportunity to collaborate and work with a lot of talented teachers.

-Preston Smith, Teacher

What do you value from the APEX program?

I value the fact that many of the professors are either principals or are in a classroom environment and they can relate to what we go through on a day to day basis.

-Rosa Sanchez, Teacher

What has it meant for the children in your class that you are in APEX?

I am extremely conscious about my teaching...learning and discussing constantly. APEX classes force me to reflect and be much more aware as a teacher. Also, I am able to apply all that I am learning to my first grade class.

-Yune Ho, Teacher
