Course Descriptions

EDEL 102. Psychological Foundations of Education.
Cognitive, effective and social/emotional development related to school settings. Theories of development, learning and instruction critically examined. Other topics include individual differences, measurement, evaluation, instructional goals, classroom management and diversity in the classroom.

EDEL 103. Social-Multicultural Foundations of Education.
Foundational preparation focused on implications of social, cultural, linguistic and economic diversity on teaching and learning. Emphasis on understanding the implications of history and social context on the educational endeavor in a pluralistic and democratic society.

EDTE 162. Meeting the Needs of Second Language Learners.
Theories of first and second language acquisition and their application to teaching, writing in diverse classrooms. Exploration of the historical, social and political context and theoretical foundations of bilingual education.

EDTE 246. Classroom Management.
Consideration of various aspects of creating an effective learning environment within the diverse, multicultural, multi-linguistic classroom. Includes examination of the classroom domains of content, conduct, and covenant (both with students and their families); the inter-connectedness among these domains; and the application of this framework to the classroom and to individual students. Students will also learn how to analyze and evaluate current theories in behavior management and study their application within their own classroom setting. Additionally, the connection between teacher well-being and the development of an effective learning environment will be explored.

EDEL 108A. Curriculum: Reading/ Language Arts.
Elementary school language / literacy acquisition in culturally diverse classrooms; emphasis on listening, speaking, reading and writing within the context of theory and practice.

EDEL 108B. Curriculum: Science.
Elementary school science curriculum and theoretical approaches; emphasis on materials, methods, content and evaluation procedures for teaching science in elementary and middle schools in a multicultural and technological society.

EDEL 108C. Curriculum: Social Studies.
Elementary and middle school social studies curriculum and instruction with emphasis on the influence of ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic, gender and disability factors on present day culture.

EDEL 108D. Curriculum: Mathematics.
Elementary and middle school mathematics curriculum and methodology relationships between instructional material and how children construct knowledge; the role of technology and issues that bar on the teaching of school mathematics.

EDEL 143A. Orientation to Student Teaching.
First semester of student teaching in your public school classroom focusing on two of the California Standards to the Teaching Profession (#2 - Creating and Maintaining Effective Environments for Student Learning and #4 Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences for All Students) and applying coursework to your classroom practice. C/NC

EDEL 143B. Student Teaching: Practicum.
Second semester of student teaching in your public school classroom focusing on two of the California Standards to the Teaching Profession (#1 Engaging and Supporting All Students in Learning and #3 Understanding and Organizing Subject Matter for Student Learning) and applying coursework to your classroom practice. Prerequisites: EDEL 143A and all Curriculum Courses. C/NC
