Official transcripts (sealed) from every college or university attended. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum GPA of 2.87 for the last 60 semester units of college work. If your GPA does not meet this minimum, you may request consideration for an exemption from this requirement by submitting a written justification to your assigned advisor with your application materials. NOTE: Failure to maintain a 3.0 GPA during the credential program will result in disqualification. In addition, if a grade of C- or lower is earned in a curriculum course, it is required that the course be retaken.

CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test). Must be passed before curriculum courses can be taken.

References. Obtain three letters of recommendation from people who know you and your work with children (immediate or extended family not included).

Resume and Letter of Intent. Prepare a formal resume and a 1-2 page personal essay in which you explain: 1) why you have decided to become a teacher; 2) your previous experiences with children (especially ethnically diverse children); and 3) any special skills or abilities you have that might enhance your potential for teaching.

Instructional Technology. State of California requires that all applicants demonstrate knowledge and operational skills pertaining to use of computers in the classroom. This can be satisfied by one of two ways: 1) taking the course EDIT 122; or 2) passing a technology test - information on the test is in Sweeney Hall Rm. 404

Subject Matter Competence. The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) requires that you must demonstrate competence in subjects taught in K-8 classrooms. This competence is demonstrated by passing the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET)

Certificate of Clearance. Required before you begin student teaching (EDEL 143A). Application packets for the Certificate are available in Sweeney Hall 108. The process involves a health check and a search of police records. A felony conviction generally disqualifies a candidate from teaching in California. As fingerprinting is a requirement for Emergency Permits, students holding these permits must submit a current copy for their file.

U.S. Constitution. California law requires that you pass either a college level course or an approved test which covers the U.S. Constitution. This course must be identified on an approved list. Your advisor, or the credential analyst in SH 108 can verify a course taken in California.

  • If you received your BA/BS outside of California, you must supply a course description which clearly states that the U.S. Constitution was covered.
  • If you must take a course it is wise to check with your advisor, or the credential analyst to insure the desired course satisfied the requirement.
  • You may satisfy this requirement by passing a test on the U.S. Constitution.
