About the Program

Mission:

With a deep understanding and interest in creating empowering interdisciplinary curriculum and pedagogy and prepares them with the intercultural and interpersonal communication skills needed to lead and teach in a culturally, politically, and linguistically diverse community.

Goals of the Program:
  • Integrate the work for the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and the Master of Arts Degree in a cohort program( while most student are admitted to the combine credential/MA program, a number of MA only candidates are admitted annually);
  • Support the work of teachers in urban schools and districts as they work to create empowering and democratic curriculum and learning environments for students;
  • Build collaborative capabilities among teachers and students within schools and across the profession;
  • Integrate research, theory and practice throughout the program;
  • Provide a collegial cohort program of support for students and faculty; and
  • Build teachers' capabilities to analyze, critique, influence, and develop equitable and empowering educational policies.

Program Cohort:

30 applicants are selected for admission to a cohort program each year. Most candidates combine the work for the MA in Education with the requirements for the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential while a few are admitted annually to pursue the MA in Education only. While the cohort program begins in the fall semester, students admitted prior to the beginning of the spring semester are able to matriculate in non-cohort coursework during the spring and summer. Only one cohort is admitted each year.

*Policy statement for those who choose to continue in the MA portion of the program: The CRA is an academically rigorous and demanding program. Admission to the CRA as a credential student does not guarantee subsequent admission to the MA portion of the program. To be admitted to the MA portion of the CRA program, students must (1) maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in all credential and MA courses before initiating the transfer to MA status and (2) receive the recommendation of the program coordinator.
