Course Information

EDEL 108D Seminar in Curriculum: Math (3 units)

FALL SEMESTER (COHORT)

EDEL 108A** Seminar in Curriculum: Reading (3 units): Prepares students with approaches to teaching reading and literacy in the elementary school classroom including classroom management, curriculum development and pedagogical strategies. This class is taught in a 6 unit section for the regular program but is divided into two (2) three (3) unit classes so that Academy students receive reading/language, literacy instruction throughout the entire credential preparation year.

EDEL 108B Seminar in Curriculum: Science (3 units): Prepares students with approaches to teaching science in the elementary school classroom including classroom management, curriculum development and pedagogical strategies.

EDEL 143A** Orientation to Student Teaching (5 units): Students spend three (3) mornings each week in public school classrooms working with children and a cooperating teacher to learn about daily teaching practice. Students are given specific assignments for observation and research while in the classroom. Students also prepare lessons and teach under close supervision.

EDTE 262* Classroom Issues in Language/Literacy Development of L2 Learners (3 units): Theories of first and second language acquisition and their application to teaching reading, writing and SDAIE in linguistically diverse classrooms. (NOTE: Substitute for EDTE 162)

EDTE 208* Sociology of Education (3 units): Provides an in depth exploration of historical grounding and theories of language, socialization, and political influences on the American school. This exploration includes an understanding of the social construction of knowledge, modernist influences on today’s schools, alternative views of schooling, the role of language and dialogue in teaching and learning and other social and political aspects of teaching and learning.(NOTE: Substitute for EDEL 103)

EDTE 244* Seminar in Curriculum (3 units) : Main themes and philosophies under girding American educational curriculum are explored and new options considered. Students examine the roots of today’s curricular practices and develop understandings and skills at recreating curriculum to be more empowering, democratic, and equitable.

*Units will be counted towards MA

**Spanish BCLAD students will enroll in EDEL 143A and EDEL 108A section 60 which will be taught in Spanish.

SPRING SEMESTER (COHORT)

EDEL 108A Seminar in Curriculum: Reading (3 units): Prepares students with approaches to teaching reading and literacy in the elementary school classroom including classroom management, curriculum development and pedagogical strategies.

EDEL 108C Seminar in Curriculum: Social Science (3 units): Prepares students with approaches to teaching social studies and in the elementary school classroom including classroom management, curriculum development and pedagogical strategies.

EDEL 143B Student Teaching (10 units): Students participate full-time in public school classrooms working with children and a cooperating teacher to learn about and engage in daily planning, assessment and teaching practice. Students assume increasingly greater responsibility for the classroom program culminating in full responsibility for the classroom. In addition, students meet regularly with the University supervisor for a seminar session.

EDTE 260* Critical Perspectives on Schooling in a Pluralist Society (3 units): Students learn to conduct a classroom research project focused on their student teaching classroom experience. They are guided through all aspects of the research process, prepare a research report and present the findings to their colleagues. (NOTE: Substitute for EDTE 246)

At this point the requirements for the California Multiple Subject Credential work have been completed. Students may apply for the Multiple Subject Preliminary Credential.

COMPLETING THE MA

Students will have completed 15 units towards the MA in Education. Below are electives within the CRA MA program. Other electives may be selected at the discretion of the MA advisor. See Policy for those who wish to continue in the MA portion of the program.

EDTE 250 Qualitative Research (3 units): Students learn about educational research and are specifically guided in methods of conducting qualitative research. During the semester students identify a problem/issue they are interested in exploring for their MA thesis or project, do an in-depth literature review on the topic and develop appropriate methods of investigation for their study. They are acquainted with methods of analysis of the data and review forums for exchange of research findings including journals, conferences and professional organizations. (Fall Semesters Only)

EDTE 206 Advanced K-8 Curriculum and Instruction (3 units): Advanced methods in K-8 school curriculum and instruction for beginning teachers. Emphasis on best practices as delineated in the California Standards for the Teaching Profession. (ELECTIVE - Alternate Fall Semesters Only)

EDTE 223 The Politics of Literacy (3 units): State, national and global decisions about literacy instruction and the impact on the profession. (ELECTIVE - Summer Semesters Only)

EDTE 261 Critical Studies in Language, Culture and Narrative (3 units): Study of cross-cultural communication for teachers with a focus on theory and practice related to language, culture and narrative in educational settings. (ELECTIVE - Alternate Fall Semesters)

EDTE 281 Philosophy of Education (3 units): Critical philosophical issues as they bear on education in a democratic society (ELECTIVE - Alternate Spring Semesters)

EDTE 298 Masters Project (3-6) OR EDTE 299 Masters Thesis (3-6): Supervised study/thesis in a specific educational field.

Students enroll in either thesis or project sections and work with individual faculty members on an individual basis to complete their MA research and thesis or project. Students who complete the thesis will conduct research, write the thesis, present the thesis to a faculty committee and publish their work through the Office of Graduate Studies. Project students conduct research on educational projects, develop a substantial research paper and develop a publication for a professional journal. Research projects are presented at an annual symposium within the College of Education.
