FALL SEMESTER (COHORT)
EDEL 108A** Seminar in Curriculum: Reading (3 units): Prepares students with approaches to teaching reading and literacy in the elementary school classroom including classroom management, curriculum development and pedagogical strategies. This class is taught in a 6 unit section for the regular program but is divided into two (2) three (3) unit classes so that Academy students receive reading/language, literacy instruction throughout the entire credential preparation year.
EDEL 108B Seminar in Curriculum: Science (3 units): Prepares students with approaches to teaching science in the elementary school classroom including classroom management, curriculum development and pedagogical strategies.
EDEL 143A** Orientation to Student Teaching (5 units): Students spend three (3) mornings each week in public school classrooms working with children and a cooperating teacher to learn about daily teaching practice. Students are given specific assignments for observation and research while in the classroom. Students also prepare lessons and teach under close supervision.
EDTE 262* Classroom Issues in Language/Literacy Development of L2 Learners (3 units): Theories of first and second language acquisition and their application to teaching reading, writing and SDAIE in linguistically diverse classrooms. (NOTE: Substitute for EDTE 162)
EDTE 208* Sociology of Education (3 units): Provides an in depth exploration of historical grounding and theories of language, socialization, and political influences on the American school. This exploration includes an understanding of the social construction of knowledge, modernist influences on today’s schools, alternative views of schooling, the role of language and dialogue in teaching and learning and other social and political aspects of teaching and learning.(NOTE: Substitute for EDEL 103)
EDTE 244* Seminar in Curriculum (3 units) : Main themes and philosophies under girding American educational curriculum are explored and new options considered. Students examine the roots of today’s curricular practices and develop understandings and skills at recreating curriculum to be more empowering, democratic, and equitable.

**Spanish BCLAD students will enroll in EDEL 143A and EDEL 108A section 60 which will be taught in Spanish. |
