EDTE 210: Becoming a Reader at Any Age

This course explores theory, research and practice as it relates to teaching native and nonnative English speakers who are beginning and struggling readers and writers. Must have your own classroom or instructor's permission. Prerequisite: EDEL 108A or EDSE 138A, or equivalent.
EDTE 211: Developing Academic Language for Reading Across the Curriculum

An exploration of research and theory relating to reading comprehension, and practical applications of this knowledge to teaching comprehension across subject areas for first and second language learners. Must have your own classroom or instructor's permission. Prerequisite: EDEL 108A or EDSE 138A, or equivalent.
EDTE 212: Leadership, Politics, and Program Evaluation

An exploration of literacy research, public policy, and effective literacy programs and instruction, and the role of the reading specialist as a curricular and staff development leader.
EDTE 213: Multicultural Literature for Children and Young Adults

About theoretical and practical issues surrounding the role of literature in literacy instruction, particularly as it relates to culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms.
EDTE 216: Ongoing Assessment in the Classroom

Focuses on ongoing/continuous literacy assessment and its role in guiding instructional decisions and practice. Must have your own classroom or instructor's permission. Prerequisites: EDEL 108A or EDSE 138A, or equivalent; EDTE 210, 211, and 292 or equivalents.

EDTE 217A:Reading Practicum #1

Supervised practical experience teaching reading to students from diverse backgrounds. Prerequisites: EDTE 210, 211, 292, and 216 or equivalents and instructor's permission.
EDTE 217B:Reading Practicum #2

Supervised practical experience teaching reading to students from diverse backgrounds. Prerequisites: EDTE 210, 211, 292, 216 and 217A or equivalents and instructor's permission.
EDTE 223: The Politics of Literacy

This course focuses on local, state, and national policies and mandates; their origins; and their impact on learners, teachers, schools, and other institutions.

EDTE 224: Seminar in Theories around Literacy

About varied theoretical perspectives on literacy and language acquisition and development, schooling, and assessment.
EDTE 290C: Qualitative Research Methods

Focuses on the design and implementation of small-scale qualitative research projects, including data analysis. Also integrates a study of current literacy research.

EDTE 292: Writing Across Cultures and Curriculum

An exploration of research, theory and practice relating to the writing processes and development of native and nonnative English speakers. This course will also be helpful for teachers preparing for National Board Certification. Must have your own classroom or instructor's permission. Prerequisite: EDEL 108A or EDSE 138A, or equivalent.
EDTE 298/299: Master's Project or Thesis 3
Supervised MA research project or thesis. Includes regularly scheduled research workshops to support students in analyzing data and writing up the study. Prerequisite: Admission to candidacy for the master's degree. This course will also be helpful for teachers preparing for National Board Certification.
