4. Statement of Purpose
A personal statement, one to two pages long, on "Why I want to become a teacher?".
5. Letters of Recommendation
Three letters from such persons as professors, coworkers, managers, or supervisors who have seen your work with children or can speak to your potential as a teacher.
Two sets of official transcripts for every college and university attended. One set should accompany your application to the department. The second set should be sent direclty to GAPE, see address below. SJSU graduates only need to submit ONE set with department application and DO NOT need to submit transcripts to GAPE if SJSU was last attended. Students who received their degree from a foreign country should review the information regarding Foreign Degree Transcript Evaluation.

7. 50 Hours of Pre-Professional Experience
50 hours required, which should be in a public K-8 classroom. Use Pre-professional Experience Form.
8. Basic Skills Requirement
A copy of the passing scores must be submitted with application. The following are ways to satisfy the basic skills requirement:
CSET and Certficate of Clearance are not required for admissions but may be submitted with your application. These requirements are, however, required by the second semester registration period or student teaching, whichever comes first.
Copy of passing scores of CSET: Multiple Subject subtests I, II, and III. Additional Information about CSET.
NOTE: Candidates admitted to the program who HAVE NOT passedALL 3 subtests by the second semester registration period will have a registration hold placed on their account. The registration hold is removed only after the department receives results of all subtests of the CSET Multiple Subject exam.
10. Certificate of Clearance
A Certificate of clearance is a document that verifies that the individual has completed the Commission's fingerprint and character and identification process. Individuals must obtain a Certificate of Clearance prior to beginning student teaching. The processing time for this certficate is approximately 2 weeks. Certificate of Clearance Instructions.
NOTE: The requirements listed below ARE NOT required for the application packet or admission to the program. They may be completed anytime before, during or after completion of the credential coursework (except where noted). However, all requirements must be completedbefore applying for the Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential. PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT THESE ITEMS TO THE ELEMENTARY DEPARTMENT. YOU WILL SUBMIT THEM TO THE CREDENTIALING OFFICE AT THE END OF THE PROGRAM WHEN YOU ARE READY TO APPLY FOR YOUR PRELIMINARY TEACHING CREDENTIAL.
