How Do I Start?

STEP 1: Attend a Group Advisement Session:

See the Advisement Session Schedule for the exact day, dates and room locations. We recommend that you download the Advisement Guide and bring it with you to the advising session. While registration is NOT required, it is recommended that you recheck the room location on the day prior to the scheduled session.

NOTE: Candidates must apply to both the University (step 2 below) and the Elementary Education Department (step 3 below) simultaneously.These are separate applications, and admission to one does not guarantee admission to the other.

STEP 2: Apply to San Jose State University:

This part of the application process requires an online GRADUATE application to San Jose State University via

Submit one set of official transcript from each institution listed on your application directly to GAPE.  SJSU graduates DO NOT need to submit SJSU transcripts to GAPE if SJSU was last attended, however, transcripts are required of ALL students for department application, see step 3.

NOTE:  The University Application generally takes 4-6 weeks to process.  Check the status of your application by logging onto MySJSU.  Your application is complete once the status shows “Referred to Department”.

STEP 3: Apply to the Teacher Education Department

Submit your Application Packet to the Teacher Education Department.  INCOMPLETE PACKETS WILL NOT BE REVIEWED OR RETURNED. See MSCP Advisement Guide for a complete list of requirements. Applications may be submitted in person to Sweeney Hall 305, emailed to or mailed to:

STEP 4: Pre-Admission Interview

Candidates who submit COMPLETE application packets will be scheduled for a pre-admissions interview within 2 weeks.
