How to Choose Your Writing Course
Welcome to First Year Writing at SJSU! The first thing you will do in this program is to explore the college writing courses available to you and decide which of these courses meets your needs as a developing college writer.
All entering freshman must complete one of two exercises.
- If you need to take the entry-level writing course, you will complete the Reflection on College Writing.
- If you have already met the entry-level requirement, you will use a decision chart to find out the course you need next.
The time you invest in the placement exercise will help you to find the course that offers you the instruction and support you need to develop as college writer.
Do You Already Have College Credits for Writing?
Perhaps through test scores or through a course equivalent in high school or community college, you have already satisfied the first general education college writing requirement: English 1A. If so, you will complete your placement exercise right here on this website. Go to What to Take After English 1A.
If you are unsure about what credits you have earned, use the chart below to determine which exercise you need to complete.
Do You Need to Take the Entry-Level College Writing Requirement?
Most students entering SJSU as first-time freshmen take English 1A. We offer two versions of this course: a yearlong course (called Stretch English) and a one-semester course. To help you decide which course is best for you, we have designed a series of exercises that allows you to explore what college writing is and gauge your readiness for the work of the course. The Reflection on College Writing is offered in Canvas, our learning management site at SJSU.
The Reflection is a prerequisite to English 1A and English 1AF (the entry-level courses). Students who will be enrolling in either of these classes, must have completed the Reflection on College Writing before coming to Frosh Orientation to register for classes. You will not be able to enroll in these course without the prerequisite.
Which Exercise Do You Need to Complete?
If you are unsure which exercise you need to complete, you will need either an EPT score or another test score exempting you from the EPT. These scores will help you to determine your enrollment status, as defined in the chart below.
Follow the GETTING STARTED chart to determine the requirements for your enrollment status.
