Graphic: CLA logoThe Center for Literary Arts (CLA) provides readings, lectures and seminars. For 20 years the CLA’s Major Authors Series has presented to the community 5 winners of the Nobel Prize, 15 winners of the National Book Award and 28 winners of the Pulitzer Prize, including Salman Rushdie, Dorothy Allison, Gore Vidal and Neil Gaiman.
 

 

Lurie Chair Author-in-Residence Program, a permanent endowment, attracts nationally and internationally known authors to a position officially called "Visiting Artist/Scholar" for a period of one or two semesters. This teaching professorship entails close contact with students and public appearances. See current and past Lurie Chairs here as well as history of the endowment .

Steinbeck Fellows Program offers new writers of any age and background a $10,000 fellowship to finish a significant writing project.

 The Writing Center is an instructional resource for all students of all disciplines and writing abilities. We offer tutoring and workshops tailored to the needs of individuals and groups.

San Jose Area Writing Project is an organization of, by, and for teachers, SJAWP is dedicated to improving the teaching and uses of writing at all grade levels (K-16) and in all disciplines.

Dorothy Wright Outstanding Teaching Awards were established in 1987 as a memorial to a former member of the Department of English who distinguished herself for her commitment to teacher education. See the winners and a further description here.

 

 

 

Globalizing Literary Studies. The purpose of this website is to highlight the world and comparative literature courses and instructors within the department of English and Comparative Literature at San José State University. Although we have a minor in comparative literature at SJSU, few students are aware of the "globalizing" interests and emphases of some of the courses being taught currently.
