In April 1969, the California Legislature passed Senate Bill 1072 (the Harmer Bill) which established EOP at the California state institutions of higher learning.
More than 40 years later, the EOP program is going strong, with access provided to first generation, low income, historically disadvantaged students. EOP promotes college access to campuses of the CSU and provides retention services to enrolled university students who participate in the EOP program.
The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is designed to improve student academic support of low-income and educationally disadvantaged students. An EOP student has the potential to perform satisfactorily in the CSU but has not been able to realize this potential because of economic or educational background. The program provides admission, academic, and financial assistance to EOP-eligible undergraduate students.
EOP students can expect to receive comprehensive educational services which include academic advisement, personal and career counseling, tutorial services, skills enhancement seminars, adjunct learning courses, as well as referral and advocacy services. Students are also provided with financial aid assistance, as well as encouragement and support.
The EOP academic advisors will help make your transition to college and to SJSU a smooth one – beginning with transitional programs offered the summer before you enroll at SJSU and continuing on throughout your undergraduate academic career.
Our advisors will provide you with Advising Services that entail: clarifying General Education and Graduation requirements, discovering the right major for you, getting advice if you are experiencing academic difficulty, helping you schedule your classes and referring you to other student services as needed.
