Admission FAQs

Note: The questions below are intended for people who need help with admission to the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at San Jose State University. If you have general questions or more in depth questions about the program, please send us an email at eop@sjsu.edu

Q: What forms do I need when I apply for EOP?

A: The following items must be completed below:

  1. All 6 pages of the EOP Applicant Information Form must be completely filled out and turned in by December 15, 2013 for Fall 2014 admission.
  2. Two (2) Recommendation forms completed entirely by two (2) separate individuals by February 1, 2014 for Fall 2014 admission.
  3. All students applying for EOP must have completed forms and letters on file in order to be considered for acceptance (includes first-time freshmen, transfer and former students returning to SJSU).
  4. All students applying for EOP must also file for Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February 1, 2014 to be considered for Fall 2014.

Q: Is the EOP application deadline different from the CSU application deadline and what is the final deadline to submit the EOP application/forms?

A: Yes.  The university's priority filing date is typically between October and November.  The filing date for students entering SJSU in fall is December 15th.  Students must turn in 2 letters of recommendation and their FAFSA to EOP by February 1st.

Prospective students must also file for FAFSA, this is a requirement in order to verify financial eligibility to EOP.  In order to be given priority EOP processing, please submit your FAFSA by no later than February 1 for a fall term.  Students that apply for FAFSA after 2/1 through 3/2 (closing priority deadline for all students) may not receive priority consideration.

Q: Do EOP applicants automatically qualify for an application fee waiver?

A: No.  Applicants must demonstrate a financial need to be considered for the fee waiver. Determination of eligibility will be made when applying to the university online at CSUMentor.  Only California residents are eligible for application fee waivers.

If you file the admission application via CSUMentor, the fee waiver request is included in the online system as part of the application process.  You will be notified at the time you apply online if you qualify for the fee waiver.

In situations where the online application is unable to determine your eligibility for a fee waiver, you will need to submit the Request for Application Fee Waiver directly to the Admission office. The Admission Office will inform you if you do not qualify for the fee waiver.

Q: How do I check the status of my EOP acceptance?

A:  For questions regarding your EOP application, recommendation letters and status of acceptance, please email the EOP office at eop@sjsu.edu .  Be sure to include your full name, SJSU ID, term applying for and the nature of your question.  Acceptance into SJSU does not guarantee acceptance into the Educational Opportunity Program.

EOP acceptance criteria does differ from SJSU admission criteria and admission into EOP is competitive.

Q: How do I check the status of my admission to SJSU and documents needed?

A: For questions regarding admissions, you will need to contact the Admissions Office directly at 408.283.7500.  You may also check your Admission To Do list online at MySJSU.

Q: How do I know if I am even eligible to apply for EOP?

A:  If you meet the criteria below, you should apply toe EOP.

  1. EOP is for undergradute students applying for the first time to SJSU. If you are transferring from another CSU or a CCC, you must have been an EOP/EOPS student at your prior campus in order to be eligible at SJSU.   Please request the prior school to send verification of EOP status directly to EOP at SJSU by the EOP application deadlines.
  2. Prospective students must meet income guidelines as found online at CSUMentor.
  3. Prospective students must be the first in their family to attend college.
  4. Prospective students must be considered California residents.
  5. Graduate students and post baccalaureate students are not eligible to apply for EOP. Undergraduate students at SJSU that continue in a graduate or post baccalaureate program at SJSU will not retain their EOP status.

Q: Does EOP accept students who do not meet the regular admission criteria?

A: Although most of SJSU's EOP students meet the regular admission requirements,  EOP provides access for a very limited number of first time freshmen who do not qualify for regular admission.

In order to be considered, a prospective student must have a complete EOP application, recommendations letters and a FAFSA on file by the established deadlines.

Q: Do I reapply to the program every year?

A: No.  EOP is determined at the time of university admission.   Once you are accepted into EOP, you will remain in EOP throughout your undergraduate education as long as you meet the EOP student responsibilities and maintain continuous enrollment at SJSU. Some important points of clarification are that:

  • Students that need to reapply for admission to SJSU must also submit and EOP application and a FAFSA form by the established deadlines in order to verify continuing eligibility for EOP.
  • Students previously admitted through regular admissions at SJSU or another CSU or CCC cannot be admitted to EOP, unless they  were previously an EOP/EOPS  student at another campus.
  • Students may not apply for EOP for future semesters.

Q: Do Students in the CCC EOPS programs automatically qualify for EOP at SJSU?

A: No.  All transfer students must submit a complete EOP application by the appropriate deadline, submit two recommendation letters and their completed FAFSA by the deadlines as well.

Pleaes note that EOP and EOPS are two different programs and that your participation in EOPS does not extend to EOP.
