Informal #10: Review of a Cultural/Intellectual Event or Text
This project is designed to help you meet the demands of section III of the English Department student learning goals, particularly with the goal to experience the "Cultural resources of the University: interest groups, public lectures, readngs by creative writers, theatrical productions, music and dance performances." as well as "Involvement in the life of the University, connection with its physical environs, participation in a dynamic, rich, diverse intellectual community."
- During the course of the semester attend a a cultural or intellectual performance (play, lecture, film) or read a text related to ethnicity in America.
- Write up a one-page review (summary & analysis).
- Explain how the event or text relates to our course (if it is not already obvious).
- You might want to evaluate how useful the text or event would be for other students studying ethnicity in American literature.
- You should check with the professor if you are unsure whether or not a review of the event or text you want to examine would be eligible for coursework credit.
Suggestions include events on or off campus that will cost money, such as Culture Clash at the San Jose Repertory Theater, and events and texts that are free, such as getting an adaptation of Abraham Chan's novella, Yekl, the film Hester Street, from the San Jose Public Library or reading a library book. There are also many readings and guest speakers appearing every semester at SJSU that are free. If you do choose an event that costs money be sure and inquire about student discounts.
