Discussion Questions for Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass

For Informal #2, just write a one-page (double-spaced, 12-point font) analysis of some aspect of Douglass’s Narrative.  The topics below may be used as suggestions, but you are not limited to them.

1. What does it mean to be a man?  Obviously, “man” can be defined in more than one way.  How does Douglass define basic human dignity in his text, in his life?

2. How is masculinity defined in this text?

3. How does Douglass represent women’s experiences in slavery?  How is femininity defined?

4. How are slave owners depicted?  What kind of commentary does Douglass make on the power dynamics between slaves and masters?

5. How does Douglass portray religion within the South?

6. What is the importance of literacy to Douglass?

7. What is his commentary on slave songs?

8. What are some of the difficulties in telling the tale of an escaped slave?

9. How do the slave holders encourage slaves to use the holidays?  How does this work to contain and control the slaves?
