This web site was first designed for educators, parents, counselors, and teachers whose students were participating in the Gear-Up Project in the San Jose Unified School District. The Gear-Up Project was directed by Dr. Xiaolu Hu, Professor of Counselor Education at San Jose State University. The links below may also be useful to anyone who is interested in helping students receive support from the Individuals with Disabilities Education and Improvement Act (IDEA) Amendment 2004IDEA governs educational policies and practices in school, home, and community settings. Also listed are links to several reliable online resources that describe interventions for students with or without special needs.

bullet Special Education:
This site provides links to
various government and professional web sites.

bullet IEP (Individualized Education Program):
An IEP is a major blue print that highlights the specific disabling condition of the student as well as why, what, when, how often and how well the students receive special education and related services to sustain their ability to access the district's core curriculum. An official training packet is available from the U.S. Office of Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS). You can also access various official web sites and sample IEPs.

bullet Transition:
IDEA mandates that every eligible student starting at age 14 will have transition service needs incorporated into their IEP, such as the appropriate course of study to either receive advanced-placement courses or other vocational and technical education programs. This is to assure each student's legal rights and ability to obtain meaningful support during their transition from middle to high school or from high school to the adult world upon leaving school. You can access official documents and related services.

bullet MI (multiple intelligences).
MI is a theory of human intelligences proposed by Howard Gardner. MI theory is adopted in my course work for both Level I and Level II Education Specialists in the Department of Special Education at San Jose State University. MI is specifically introduced to serve as (a) a growth paradigm that values individuals' ability within any perceived disabilities, (b) the tools to teach for understanding and (c) the foundation for career exploration and self-advocacy training.
bullet CREDE (National Research Center for Education, Diversity, and Excellence).
I was one of the Principle Investigators in this research center since 1996. I conducted a 3-year research project in a Title I middle school in San Jose areas. We explored the combination of CREDE's five effective teaching standards and MI as tools to enhance participating students' language and literacy development as well as content area learning in history, math, and science. In this web site, you can access the contents of CREDE's five effective teaching standards, various publications and links to researchers across the country.
