Essay 3 Prompts.

 

Write an essay on one of the following topics:

 

  1. Analyze the Proem for either Book II or Book III of Spenser’s Faerie Queene and discuss how it relates to the content of the Book itself and/or its titular virtue.

 

  1. Trace the use of either “mirrors” or “wounds” in Book III.  Make an argument about how the image functions within the narrative.

 

  1. Discuss the treatment of female characters in Books II and III.  What conclusions can you draw about Spenser’s ideas about women?  Your analysis must include a discussion of the “feminist” stanzas that begin Cantos 2 and 4, and you must also take into account Britomart’s obvious prowess as a knight.
