SHARING ONE OF YOUR INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION EXPERIENCES 

PURPOSE: The purpose of this oral presentation is to share with your classmates one of your most meaningful (positive, life giving) INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATI0N EXPERIENCES (at home, at work and/or social life) with people who are different from you. This assignment is designed to emphasize that intercultural communication competence is not simply a matter of what we read and study, but also a consequence of what we experience. Moreover, it stresses that our different and distinctive positive experiences interacting with other people, do account as legitimate and valued sources of knowledge, and that we can learn from each other. You are free to select the intercultural experience for this presentation.  Your intercultural experience may be related to the content of the chapter that will be covered in class during the week in which your presentation is due (see syllabus). This assignment meets the Learning Objectives #1,#2,#3,and #4.
 
CONTENT AND STRUCTURE:
  The content and structure of your intercultural experience must be as follows:
1) Describe briefly the intercultural communication experience: context and key components.
2) Cultural Explanation and Theoretical Inputs: Provide a cultural theoretical explanation for what happened: first, YOUR OWN CULTURAL THEORY AND NAME IT. Explain: a) why it (the communication experience) happened (the causes), b) the relationships that you discovered, and c) the consequences or implications. And second, include AHOTHER THEORETICAL INPUT from textbook or other sources to illustrate or expand on your own cultural theoretical explanation.  The focus of your cultural theoretical explanation should be on recognizing and assessing the impact of religion, history, ethnicity, age, race, social class, gender, sexuality, region, nationality, generation, disability on the construction of cultural identity and communication behavior.
3) Learnings: Tell us what you learned from the experience (3 major learnings)

WRITTEN OUTLINE:
The content of your oral presentation must be summarized in TWO-TYPED-PAGE, FULL-SENTENCE OUTLINE. The basic structure of this outline must contained: (Include the following section titles in written outline)
I. Introduction: 1. Attention Getter, 2. Purpose and Topic, and 3. Preview only Titles of the main points of your presentation: (a) Description of experience; b) Cultural Theoretical Explanation/and Theoretical Inputs , and c) Learnings).
II. Body: 1) Description of the experience. 2) Cultural Theoretical Explanation/and Theoretical Inputs : a), your own cultural theory and name it) and b) another theoretical input from textbook or other sources (cite sources here). 3) Learnings (three (3) majors learnings).
III. Conclusion: 1. Summary (only Titles of the main points of your presentation: a) Description of experience, b) Cultural Theoretical Explanation/and Theoretical Inputs and c) Learnings), and 2. Final Thought.

Cite also sources in outline and list them in page 3, using APA or MLA citation system. At least one citation from textbook or other sources is required.

The oral presentation must emphasized: 1) Content relevance and organization, 2) Physical delivery skills (eye contact, gestures, dynamism); 3) Vocal delivery skills (volume, and rate); and 4) Visual aids (One visual aid is required) Each individual presentation will last from 7-8 minutes. After the oral presentation, you will have some time (7 minutes) to entertain some questions from your classmates.
