Learning Fractions Using Fraction Strips
Grade Level: 4 th Grade
Expected Outcomes:
- Students will experience a multi modality hands-on math activity (a fraction game) that teaches fractions and their equivalents.
- Students will work cooperatively with a partner to identify the correct combination of fractions that it takes to complete the whole.
- Students will recognize some basic fraction equivalents in the fraction family of 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16.
Room Setup:
- Use existing table arrangement with students partnering with their neighbor.
Introduction:
- Present the class with the prospect of learning fractions and their equivalents while playing The Fraction Game with a partner.
- But, before we can play we need to make the fraction kit using five strips of different colored construction paper.
- As they are instructed how to make the kit by cutting the strips into increasingly smaller pieces or fractions I will be reviewing the number of a particular fraction it takes to equal one-half.
- Remind them that working cooperatively together and learning about fractions is more important than winning and helping your partner is part of the game.
Guided Practice:
- First, I will model playing the game with a volunteer by using magnets to hold the pieces on the whiteboard so it is clearly visible as they follow along with their fraction kit.
- As I am demonstrating how the game is played I will be showing how to fill in a simple scorecard on the overhead that will help to reinforce the concept of equivalent fractions.
Independent Practice:
- Have them play the game with their partner as I walk around praising understanding and participation.
- And finally, have them complete an example similar to their scorecard that checks for understanding.
Closure:
- Share and compare results and encourage them to take their fraction kits home and play with their family. Approximate time 30 – 40 minutes.
Materials and Resources:
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Scorecard
- Markers
- Flashcards
