Here are Suggestions for Applying Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs to Your Classroom

Physiological

1) reduced and free lunch programs; 2) correct room temperatures, 3) bathroom breaks, 4) drink break

Safety

1) well planned lessons, carried out in an orderly fashion, 2) controlled classroom behaviors, 3) interagency procedures and policies discussed and practiced, 4) fair discipline, 5) consistent expectations, 6) attitude of teacher, accepting and non judgemental, pleasant, non-threatening, 7) provide praise for correct responses instead of punishement for incorrect response.

Love & Belonging

With regard to teacher-student relationships:

teacher personality emphathetic, considerate and interested inthe individual, patient, fair, able toself-disclose, positive attitude, good listener.

use one-on-one instruction, use teacher conferencing, provide positive comments and feedback rather than negative.

be available for students in need, listen to students, be supportive, have personal helpers on rotating basis

show that you value students thoughts, opinions and judgements

show trust of students by providing situation where it is necessary (ex. morning errands, classroom leader)

With regard to student-student relationships

1) class meetings, 2) class discussions, 3) peer mentoring, 4) provide situations negotiating mutual trust, 5) show and tell sharing.

Esteem

Self-Esteem: 1) develop new knowledge based on background knowledge so as to help ensure success (scaffolding) 2) pace instruction to fit individual need 3) focus on strengths and assets, 4) take individual needs and abilities into account when planning lessons and carrying them out, 5) teach to the multiple mode of learning, 6) teach model learning strategies, 7) base new teaching strategies and plans on learning outcomes, 8) be available and approachable so students having difficulties feel comfortable coming for help, 9) involved all students in class participation and responsibilities 10) when necessary to discipline a child, do so as privately as possible.

Respect from Others: 1) develop a classroom environment where students are positive and nonjudgemental, 2) star of the week, 3) award programs for jobs well done, 4) provid deserved positions of status, 5) reconition programs for special effort (ex. helpful citizens, good listeners, et. al. 6) develop and carry out a curriculum to encourage children to be empathetic and kind 7) emply cooperative learning i such a way as to develop trust between group members, 8) involve students in activities of iimportance and worthiness (ex. cleaning up the environment, carrying out a food drive for the needy)

Knowledge and Understanding

1) allow students time to explore areas of curiosity, 2) provide lesson that are intellecturally challenging, 3) plan lessons that connect areas of learning and have students compare and contrast to search for relationship 4) use a discovery approach to learning whenever possible, 5) have students approach topics of learning from various angles 6) provide opportunites for philosophical thought and disucssion, 7) get students involved in intellecturally challenging programs (ex. Odyssey of the Mind)

Aesthetic

1) Oeganize classroom materials in a neat and appealing way, 2) display student artwork in an appealing manner 3) put up interesting and colorful wall hangings, 4) replace overly worn classroom materials periodically, 5) create varied appealing and interesting learning centers, 6) rooms painted in pleasing colors, 7) large window areas 8) well maintained pyshical surroundings (ex. walls painted, desks clean and repaired) 8) fresh smelling rooms

Self-Actualizations

1) Expect students to do their best, 2) give students freedom to explore and discover on their own, 3) make learning meaningful 4) plan lessons involving metacognitive activities, 5) get students involved in self-expressive projects, 6) allow students to be involved in creative activies and projects.
