Guidelines for applying Piaget to Teaching

| Ages 2-6 | Ages 7-11 | 11 and older |

Teaching preoperational children (2-6 yrs.)

1. Use concrete props and visual aids
2. Allow children to manipulate aids
3. Make instructions relatively short, using action words
4. When assigning projects, show children examples of completed work
5. Don't expect students to consistently see the world from another perspective
6. Recognize that students may have limited understanding of word meaning
7. Give children ample, hands-on practice with skills that serve as building blocks
8. Provide a wide range of experiences with new concepts and words
9. Provide ample opportunities for children to utilize new concepts and words.

Teaching concrete operational students (7-11 yrs)

1. Continue to use concrete props and visual aids, especially when dealing with abstract material
2. Continue to give students the opportunity to manipulate objects
3. Give students the opportunity to develop hypotheses
4. Give students the opportunity to test hypotheses
5. Use familiar concepts or analogies to introduce more complex ideas
6. Give students ample opportunities to classify, group, order and organize concepts at increasingly complex levels.
7. Present problems that require logical, analytical thinking.

Teaching Formal operational students (11 years and above)

1. Continue to use concrete operational teaching strategies
2. Encourage students to develop experiments in their entirety
3. Give students the opportunity to explore hypothetical questions
4. Give students the opportunity to solve complex problems and reason scientifically
5. Whenever possible, teach broad concepts, not just facts
6. Encourage students to engage in higher
7. -order thinking like analysis and critique
