Guidelines for Assessing Your Videotaped Lesson
Plan and implement a reading/language arts lesson that focuses on English learners. Attach lesson plan to this assessment.
- Identify three students in regard to English language development: one student for whom English is a first language and two students who are at differing levels of English learning. Collect their work samples from this lesson.

View your videotape at least two times, by yourself or with a teacher, peer or colleague, and respond to as many of the following as possible:
- What are your overall impressions of yourself as you watch the videotape?
- The first time you watch the tape, focus on your behaviors as a teacher:
- What do you note about your movements, voice, wait time, clarity of directions, questioning strategies, or other behaviors?
- How did you interact with your students?
- How did you handle surprises or unexpected events?
- What management strategies could be different?
- What was done well?
- How did you support English learners?
- Watch the tape a second time and focus on your students and classroom organization:
- What does their body language indicate?
- How did their activity level change during the lesson?
- Which students responded to questions or directions? How did English learners respond?
- What responses indicated critical or higher order thinking?
- What non-verbal behaviors or activities provide evidence of learning or skill level?
- How do students interact with each other when in groups? When functioning as a whole class?
- How did they react to surprises or unexpected events?
- What specific insights did you gain about English learners?
- How do you organize the classroom to support English learners?
- Focus on work samples from the three students:
- What did they already know?
- What are their skills/understandings gained in this lesson?
- What are the next steps?
