Riots make a statement in wind with 7-2 victory
SAN JOSE, CA – In blustery conditions (I said blustery, not
blistery, who could it be blistery???), the Riots imposed their will with four straight goals to open the game and two
at the end to put it away. A strong
gusty wind made play tough for both teams Monday, but the Riots endured
through, posting a comfortable 7-2 win.
In the battle for supremacy in
the first half, the wind won most of the war with each team struggling to get
anything going. There was little action
to speak of, other than a 20 second flurry which separated the teams. In the 20th minute of the contest,
Angela “Payday Bar” Nunez, who was recently traded, made her former club pay as
she blasted the ball past Dropkixx goalkeeper Sarah “Rolos” Wisotsky to give
the Riots a 1-0 lead.
“I’m not going to lie, I was
pissed off when I found out I was traded,” Nunez said. “I wanted to make a statement and my goal was
it. Eat that Dropkixx!!!”
The Riots were not finished
though as they found themselves again in the scoring column after Liz “Good N’
Plenty” Behlen collected a clearing attempt and blasted a volley into the net
to double the lead.
Halftime could not come soon
enough for both teams as they regained themselves.
“Even with the two goal lead, I
really wasn’t happy with my team’s play,” team captain Nina “Nutrageous” Butera
said. “We are out to win this league not
to just sneak by. This is a shout-out to
some of my players, ‘pick it up or you’re gone!’”
Apparently Butera’s halftime
speech was a winner because 53 seconds into the second half, Katie “Starburst”
Knopp buried a ball into the net to increase the Riot lead to 3-0. Five and a half minutes later, Emmy “Skor
Bar” Belding added a goal of her own to the scoresheet off a feed from
Stephanie “Fun Dip” Righetti.
Down 4-0, the Dropkixx where
determined to get back into the game and stepped up their pressure. It eventually paid off in the 43rd
minute as Roxy “Milk Duds” Kamal put Michelle “Nerds” Haughey behind the defense
and Haughey finished beautifully into the lower right corner to cut into the
Riots lead. The Dropkixx nearly made it
4-2, but an open net was denied by the post.
The Riots all but put the game
away as Belding scored her second goal of the match on a feed from Behlen. Haughey added her second as well on a nifty
feed from Hallsie “Chocolate Covered Ants” Pacheco, but it was too little too
late just 3:30 from time. And if there
was any doubt about a comeback, the Riots quickly put that to bed scoring just
24 seconds later as Righetti chipped for the far post and less than a minute
after that, Belding completed her hattrick assisted by Nunez to complete the
game and credit the 7-2 victory.
