Early second half surge leads Dropkixx to victory

SAN JOSE, CA – In a close match at halftime, the Dropkixx turned out five straight goals early in the second half to blow out the visiting Riots 7-3 at Spartan Field on Monday afternoon.  The win marked the second straight second half explosion of goals for the Dropkixx.

“I just have my halftime speech down now,” said team captain Sarah “The Legend of Zelda” Wisotsky.  “Early in the season I just didn’t have my ‘A’ game during my halftime talk.  I took that seriously.  I attended the Tony Robbins seminar, talked to L. Ron Hubbard, practiced in front of the mirror for hours and hours and now it is all paying off.”

The self-help gurus have indeed sparked the Dropkixx season.  In what looked to be a defensive battle, the Dropkixx got on the board first with just over four minutes remaining in the first half on a goal from SPL leading scorer Roxy “Guitar Hero” Kamal.  The goal was controversial as Katie “Ms. Pac-Man” Knopp fed Kamal for a breakaway.  In what looked to be offsides, television replays clearly showed that Kamal’s run had started on her own half of the field and the goal stood.

“That’s a bunch of bullshit!!!!!!” Riots captain Nina “Mortal Kombat” Butera politely disagreed with the referee’s decision to allow the goal.

Kamal stretched the lead to 2-0 as she finished a feed from Katie “Call of Duty” Bonadies who made her first appearance in the 2009 season after an offseason knee surgery.

“I’m just happy to be out there,” Bonadies commented after the game.  “I am just happy to be here.  I hope I can help the ballclub and the good lord willing things will work out.  I am just going to take things one day at a time.”

The Riots fought back, scoring just a minute before half as Kim “Super Mario Brothers” Johnston stuck her first goal of the season to cut the lead in half.

The Dropkixx came out after break firing on all cylinders.  Just 41 seconds into the second frame, Lauren “Missile Command” Ng-Pinkerton extended the Dropkixx lead to 3-1.  Knopp, who earlier assisted Kamal, got her favor returned when Kamal set her up for a goal just two minutes later.  Hallsie “Dance Dance Revolution” Pacheco made her own presence felt, adding two goals for the ‘Kixx on assists from Kamal and Shanelle “Tetris” Furner respectively.  The Kamal/Knopp scoring machine rose again as Kamal then finished off her hat trick on a helper from Knopp to extend the lead to 7-1 and put the game out of reach.

“To be honest, I have to thank Joey the shoe guy down the street,” Kamal said about her scoring day.  “After the first game this season, I was on fire so I had those boots bronzed.  That was a bad move and I paid for it dearly as I couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn for a while.  But it was Joey who saved my career.  I told those bronzed boots to Joey and he stripped all that bronze off until there was only leather left.  Oh Joey, you’re my hero!”

The Riots fell short in their comeback attempt, scoring the final two goals.  Liz “Frogger” Behlen got on the scoresheet with just under 10 minutes to play to give the Riots hope on an assist from Emmy “After Burner” Belding.  But it was not the Riots day as their final goal came in the last second of play as Belding headed home a beautiful ball on a service from Behlen.
