Belding and Furner spark Riots for win
Sponsored by Nabisco

SAN JOSE, CA – Emmy “Nutter Butter” Belding and Shanelle “Chips
Ahoy” Furner unleashed huge efforts, accounting for eight of the nine Riots
goals to lift the orange to a 9-5 victory on Spartan Field Monday afternoon in
the final SPL regular season match.
Mandy
“Snickerdoodle” Martin opened the scoring just under 10 minutes into the first
half, giving the Riots a 1-0 lead. The
orange struck again moments later when goalkeeper Nina “Lady Fingers” Butera’s
punt found a streaking Belding to extend the lead to 2-0. The Dropkixx would return fire as Roxy
“Animal Crackers (wait… are these cookies or crackers… DAMN!!!” Kamal found an
open Katie “Gingersnaps” Bonadies who buried her first goal of the day. Things would remain rather quiet for a bit
until Belding found goal again on an assist from Furner to take a 3-1 lead into
halftime.
After
a fairly quiet first half, things heated up immediately in the second
frame. Belding, SPL leading scorer, made
her presence felt netting three goals in the span of a minute, just moments
into the half to blow the game open.
“Nina
pulled me aside at halftime and gave me a few tips,” Belding commented. “I took out my nifty tool kit and made some
adjustments to my jet pack and WOW!!
What a difference!! GO EMMY
GO!!!”
After
Belding’s fifth goal, it was Furner’s turn to dent the scoresheet. Just over a minute later, Furner scored on a
feed from Katie “Thin Mints” Knopp to extend the Riots lead to 7-1 and it
looked to be a blowout.
The
Dropkixx had other ideas, however. Kamal
made a bid for her league MVP candidacy netting two quick goals, both assisted
by Stephanie “Pinwheels” Righetti.
Bonadies also added her second goal of the afternoon to cut the Riots
lead to 7-4.
“It
is time for me to make my move,” Kamal said.
“That Emmy girl doesn’t have the mojo to even shine my boots. You wait and see who is on top at the end.”
If
the result was in doubt with the Dropkixx comeback, Furner quickly laid that
idea to rest, scoring two of the final three goals of the match, surrounding
another Kamal strike to cement the 9-5 victory for the Riots.
“I
was proud of our performance today,” Butera said. “I am going to have to go back to my office
and break down the video and prepare for the championship match on Friday. Those Dropkixx are in for something special.”
With
the result, the Dropkixx still hung on for the top seed in the regular season
and will have home field advantage for Friday’s first-ever Spartan Premier
League Championship. The championship
match will be sold out and will be broadcast live on ESPN 8 “The Ocho.” Stay tuned for local listings.
