Lewis Aptekar

Dr. Aptekar received his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Michigan. After having post-graduate training in Clinical Psychology from Texas Tech Medical School, he became licensed as a Clinical Psychologist.

He is a Professor of Counselor Education at San Jose State University with academic awards including two Fulbright scholarships (Colombia and Swaziland), and the Kellogg/Partners of the Americas Fellowship in International Development. He is past President, Society of Cross-cultural Research, a former Scholar at the Rockefeller Foundation Study and Conference Center (Bellagio, Italy), a Senior Fulbright Specialist, Honduras, and a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, University of Zambia.

He has received research grants from the National Science Foundation, the Natural Hazards and Research Applications Center, and Sun Microsystems.

Dr. Aptekar's books include Street children of Cali (Duke University Press, 1988), Environmental disasters in global perspective (G. K. Hall/Macmillan, 1994), In the Lion’s Mouth: Hope and Heartbreak in Humanitarian Assistance. (Xlibris, 2010), and Street and homeless youth: A cross-cultural perspective (Springer, in press). He has published over 50 chapters and articles in peer reviewed scientific journals. He has been affiliated with the Universidad del Valle, Colombia, Institute of African Studies, University of Nairobi, University of Swaziland, Addis Ababa University, and the Free University of the Netherlands.
