Line networks- Harmony-Variety / PEN & INK - on 9x12 bristol board
MATERIALS: 9x12" bristol board; black ink markers, ruler, pencil, sketch pad
PREPARATION: As practice for the composition below, play with all the balck ink markers by drawing line networks on bristol board. This is simply practice to explore marks and doodles that can be made with these pens. Here are some examples of line networks made with pen & ink.
PROCEDURE: Re-interpret one of your Memory Landscapes into a composition that combines Harmony and Variety. You must use only line and line networks. The composition should be in a picture frame on 9x12 bristol(see example on the left). Follow these steps:
- Start with a simple basic thumbnail sketch (don't try to work out every single idea in the thumbnail).
- Re-draw the outlines of the composition (just the basic structures, not the details) on the 9x12 bristol using pencil. Keep you pencil lines very light (you will need to erase all of these when done).
- Switch to black ink markers. Let the composition change as you build it, allowing lines to respond to one another. Don't try to follow every pencil mark exactly. Let the personality of the pen show - the line character!
- Good figure/ground relationship (Line will create shapes. All shapes must be interesting.)
- Interesting interpretation of the opposing ideas of Harmony and Variety.
- Interesting line character.
- Good, clean presentation. crisp borders etc.
Homework - ROOM thumbnail compositions:
- Cut out 2 simple L frames as shown to the left using a sheet of bristol or other stiff paper. Intersect these frames and use this viewfinder to locate interesting compositions around your room that are very tightly cropped (the image may become abstract).
- Draw 6 thumbnail picture frames in pencil on a 9x12" piece of bristol.
- When you find an interesting composition, draw the image you see using only lines and line networks in one of the picture frames. Draw these very lightly in pencil.
- Repeat this process for all six compositions.
- Now, switch to black ink markers to finish the compositions. You may vary the width of lines but use only lines and line networks.
CRITERIA:
- Good figure/ground relationship found through tight cropping
- Line quality
- Presentation
