FINAL PAPER & Museum Visit

This paper serves as your final exam.  You will need to spend some time looking at the chosen work.

  1. Choose a museum from the list found on the INFORMATION page. Spend several hours looking at the various exhibits in the museum.
  2. Choose one painting in the museum.  Note the Title, Artist, Year, Size, Medium, and any other information provided. Make thumbnail sketches as a visual aid.
  3. Write a one page (500 - 600 word) paper including the following:
            a.  Introduce the painting to the reader by describing the SUBJECT.
            b.  Choose THREE ELEMENTS and describe their physical qualities. (example: What kind of line? How does the artist use line? What does her/his line convey to you?)
            c.  Choose THREE PRINCIPLES OF ORGANIZATION and discuss these in relation to the composition.
            d.  Relate the above FORMAL issues to the painting's CONTENT.
  4. Paper must be printed out on a single sheet of paper (if you need more space use the back). Here is an example of information required at the top of page:

CRITERIA: (counts as FINAL EXAM)
1. Demonstrated understanding of 3 elements and 3 principles as they relate to the chosen work.
2. A strong, formal discussion using terms covered in course and readings.
3. All required information (see example above)
4. General quality of museum experience.

NOTE ON MUSEUM PRICES:  Bring student ID for discount on entry fees (for San Jose Museum bring library card). All museums have at least one day a month with free admission. Click on LINKS to view price information, show dates, hours and locations.
Galleries always have free admission. They are usually closed on Sundays and Mondays.
