GOALS:
- to explore the work (color) of one artist in depth
- to explore the relationship between the additive and subtractive spectrums by translating the chosen artist's use of color (subtractive/reflective) into a digital medium (additive/light).
PREPARATION & PROCESS:
- Get to know your chosen artist VISUALY as well as details of his/her life (time period, artistic Movement associated with etc.)
- Observe and record COLORS and COLOR RELATIONSHIPS related to your chosen artist.
- Make a digital Color Cart (72dpi, 3x9inches). Demo will be given in class.
Upload this chart to a photo album on one of the free sites (flickr, picasa etc.). Post a link to your chart on the COMMENTS section of the "Artist and Projects Links" blog. Also include a link to your chosen artist. Here is an example of the information I need:
- Your first name
http://www.flickr.com/photos/33073553@N05/sets/72157610782877678/ (this is link to your chart)
Artist Name
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Bacon_(painter) (this is a link to a good, visual page regarding your chosen artist) - Reinterpret your artist's work into a series of images using a digital medium (digital photos, photoshop project, digital video). You should not copy the artist's work but create images that reflect his/her use of color. The series should consist of a minimum of 18-24 images that form a formally unified whole.
- Do not copy or scan the artist’s work.
PHOTO SHOOT:
- Digital photos (slr camera, phone camera etc.)
- Photos can be edited, collaged, processed etc. using Photoshop or similar software if accessible to you.
OUTPUT TO WEB:
- After you have edited and chosen your photos, put them together in a folder on your computer. Be sure to EDIT the group down to a UNIFIED WHOLE that reflects the color sensibility of your chosen artist without copying their work.
- Each student will sign up for an individual meeting to discuss the progress of the project.
- Output this set of images to one of the free on-line photo services like flickr (yahoo) or picasa (gmail). Note: you should not need to create a new account if you already have a gmail or yahoo e-mail account. If you have a blog or use facebook etc. for your photos, that would work too. The only requirement is that the works be in an album so we can view it as a slideshow from home or class. Be sure that the public (us) can access them without needing any special passwords.
- Copy-paste the exact link to this album in the comments section of the blog titled, "Artist and Projects links". This is due on 5/7
- Anyone choosing another medium like DIGITAL VIDEO, PAINTER, ILLUSTRATOR, ANIMATION etc. for your project should check with me individually.
PRESENTATIONS:
- Post your links by 5/7. I will use these to create the Light Project Page. Finish your project by 5/16.
- All students should visit THE LIGHT PROJECT PAGE between 5/17 and 5/19. Check the artist links and the student project links. Please review and be ready to discuss all work.
- Presentations and discussions will be in groups by Time Period or Movement.
- Critique will take place during our FINAL EXAM MEETING time period. Check the syllabus for date. All students must be present.
CRITERIA:
- Focused observation of color related to your artist. (this is evidenced by your Chart and final SET but also by your process and discussions with me and your group)
- The series should form a unified whole.
- The series should capture the SPIRIT of your chosen artist's use of color in an original way.
- It should connect to your own time and place (contemporary).
- You are responsible to know essential facts about your artist (time period, movement, country)
Questions for group discussion during critique:
- What do each of your artists have in common?
- What were they reflecting of their time? note: "... a work of art holds up (focuses) for everyone the understanding of being (in its time)" -H.Dreyfus
- Did use of color play a part in this?
