Note for all of these studies: Center your design on a full sheet of watercolor paper (presentation counts!)
1. PERSONAL COLOR PALLET
5"x 5" color pallet (divided into 25 spaces) on watercolor paper - Mix a series of different colors which accurately represent you. This should be "your" pallet!
2. Free study in LUMINOUS COLORS (contrasto of hue) / with pallet
1x 5" color pallet (divided into 5 spaces) and 5x5" on watercolor paper. The colors for this study should all be very bright, luminouse and clean. And you should try to place different colors next to each other. The composition should be loud and exciting. You can choose any of the colors for the 5 spots in the top pallet.
3. Free study in PRIMARY TRIAD / with pallet | Use the traditional PRIMARY colors with black and white.
1x 5" color pallet (divided into 5 spaces) and 5x5" PRIMARY TRIAD color study on watercolor paper. Use only true blue, red, yellow, white and black. Mix the colors with white, black or gray but do not mix them together. The composition should show only the primary pallet. The top pallet should have red, white, blue, yellow, and black.
4. Free study in ANALOGOUS COLOR / with pallet | Use RELATED colors
1x 5" color pallet (divided into 5 spaces) and 5x5" ANALOGOUS color study on watercolor paper. Choose only related colors (eg: three neighbors on the color wheel). Make your design using these colors and any mixtures of the colors. You can also mix in white or black. Lastly, add a small (very small) area using a contrasting color for a point of emphasis. The effect of the composition should be relatively relaxing (except for the point of emphasis). For the pallet at the top use any 5 colors from the design except the contrast color.
5. COMPLEMENTARY COLOR STUDY / with pallet | Use ONLY the two complements plus white.
1x 5" color pallet (divided into 5 spaces) and 5x5" COMPLEMENTARY color study on watercolor paper.
For the pallet at the top, put the two complements on the outside squares. The middle square should be a neutral gray mixed from these two colors. The other two squares are mixtures of outside colors with gray. The design can include any mixtures of the two complements. Either use a watercolor technique or use white, but no black except what you can mix from the complements.
