Assignments and Grading Policy
a. Studio Work / Portfolio / Drawing Journal:
• Daily studio work is the backbone of this class. It is in the classroom studio, while students are drawing (and I’m walking around the room) that most of the teaching in this class happens. Participation is essential. Props are arranged and lit specifically for each assignment. It is not possible to re-create them exactly. If you miss a day you have lost that opportunity (as they say in Sandlot, “for-ever.”)
• Portfolios will be collected and graded twice (midterm and final).
• The Drawing Journal is where students will do most homework assignments as well as EXTRA drawing. It is your chance to shine and to do personal work using skills learned in this class. Books will be evaluated for style and level of focus (lots of work!) during individual meetings to be held on Nov. 13 – Nov. 20)

b. Museum Visit: Students will choose a museum or gallery show (from provided list) to visit during the semester. Drawings and notes from this visit should be included in the drawing journal – which is DUE by Nov. 13 (see above).

c. Homework: Expect an average of 3 hours of homework per week to finish drawings and to do individual assignments including journal work. Students will also be expected to use the course website regularly to explore links to artists relevant to our current work.

d. Class Participation: On-time attendance and active participation are essential elements of this class. “Curiosity and an interest in the world around you and in getting your hands dirty” is a critical trait for any artist or designer. Absence, late arrivals, and early departures will seriously affect your progress/grade.
Criteria for Studio Project grades:
• Quality of presentation
• Demonstrated (visual) understanding of the specific assigned objectives
• Participation in critiques (absence from critique lowers project grade by 10%)
• Creative risk
Penalty for late work: Projects and papers turned in late will drop 10% per class day. This applies even with routine illnesses/situations (colds, flu, doctor appointments, travel, car problems etc.). E-mails informing me of these situations are appreciated - but please make all effort to get assignments from course website, a fellow student, or meet with me during office hours. Exceptions to the late work policy will be made for serious, unexpected situations. In these cases students must make an appointment to meet in my office.
Portfolio Work 60%
Drawing Journal 20%
Museum Paper 10%
Class Participation 10%
Total 100%

Classroom Protocol
Cell phones should be turned off during class. Computer use is limited to course related content.
Dropping and Adding
Students are responsible for understanding the policies and procedures about add/drops, academic renewal, etc. Information on add/drops are available at http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/soc-fall/rec-324.html . Information about late drop is available at http://www.sjsu.edu/sac/advising/latedrops/policy/ . Students should be aware of the current deadlines and penalties for adding and dropping classes.

University Policies
Academic integrity
Students should know that the University’s Academic Integrity Policy is availabe at http://www.sa.sjsu.edu/download/judicial_affairs/Academic_Integrity_Policy_S07-2.pdf. Your own commitment to learning, as evidenced by your enrollment at San Jose State University and the University’s integrity policy, require you to be honest in all your academic course work. Faculty members are required to report all infractions to the office of Student Conduct and Ethical Development. The website for Student Conduct and Ethical Development is available at http://www.sa.sjsu.edu/judicial_affairs/index.html.
Instances of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Cheating on exams or plagiarism (presenting the work of another as your own, or the use of another person’s ideas without giving proper credit) will result in a failing grade and sanctions by the University. For this class, all assignments are to be completed by the individual student unless otherwise specified. If you would like to include in your assignment any material you have submitted, or plan to submit for another class, please note that SJSU’s Academic Policy F06-1 requires approval of instructors.

Campus Policy in Compliance with the American Disabilities Act
If you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, or if you need to make special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please make an appointment with me as soon as possible, or see me during office hours. Presidential Directive 97-03 requires that students with disabilities requesting accommodations must register with the DRC (Disability Resource Center) to establish a record of their disability.
