Note: by next week students should have all materials available at all classes (check in room Art 125 about lockers) Reading: Click here for readings You will need the login and password given in class. Once on the page, look for the #8: Kimon Nicolaides, The Natural Way to Draw. Go to the Beginning Drawing Blog. Look under the Topics menu and click on Gesture drawing. Look through all three blogs about gesture.
Week 2 Aug 31	Gesture Drawing: Journal exercises Materials: Drawing Journal, all pencils, sharpener, erasers, sharpie: fine / ultra-fine point	Lecture: Gesture and contour Gesture Drawing Materials: Drawing board, newsprint pad, vine charcoal, all pencils, sharpener, all erasers, drawing journal.	Homework: Students can leave a comment about the reading (requirement is 4 comments during the semester on any of the blogs) Journal work (journal will be checked mid-term) 1 more page of gestures from outdoor observation 3 pages of gestures from these videos: free-style dancing, ballet, hip hop competition
Week 3 Sept 7	Blind Contour / Contour Line Materials: drawing board, newsprint pad, drawing paper pad, all pencils, sharpener, all erasers. Demo: journal line exercises	Cross Contour Materials: drawing board, drawing paper, bristol board, all pencils and erasers.	Homework: contour (foot) Contour drawing: your foot - #2B pencil on a sheet of Bristol (remove bristol from pad) Due with portfolio #1. Download reading #2. Jack Flam. Matisse on Art. Looking at life with the eyes of a child. 1953. Journal work: Line exercises - "ready, aim, fire": 2 pages straight lines Cut two L shapes from the illustration board. See diagram.
Week 4 Sept 14	Lecture: Matisse Composition Materials: drawing board, newsprint pad, drawing paper, caligraphy brush & ink, small water container, a rag. In addition you will need two L shapes (cut out from illustraion board).	Sequential Line Exercises Materials: drawing board, drawing paper, bristol pad, all pencils, sharpener, plastic eraser	Homework: cross-contour (hand) Cross-contour drawing: your hand - #2B pencil on a sheet of Bristol (remove bristol from pad) Due with portfolio #1. Week 6 Sept 28	Line Networks: hat Materials: Bristol paper pad, all pencils (HB, 2B, 3B etc.), pencil sharpener, erasers.	Journal Check (individual meetings) Line Networks: rope Materials: Bristol paper pad, all pencils (HB, 2B, 3B etc.), pencil sharpener, erasers. Also bring newsprint pad and vine charcoal.	Homework On Bristol Board: Make a line drawing of a cylindrical object that belongs to you (hat, cup etc.). Use only line networks and line weight to indicate values. (pencils 2B, 3B) See course blog about Seurat and Pointillism.
Week 7 Oct 5	Elipses, Cylanders Materials: Drawing paper, Newsprint pad, vine charcoal, all pencils (2B, 3B etc.), pencil sharpener, erasers.	Pointilism Materials: Pen, ink, Bristol board, pencils, erasers.	Homework On Bristol Board, using pen & ink draw an object using pointilism. Pay attention to different values. See list in criteria below. Portfolio #2 Due Tuesday (cover all pieces with tracing paper)
Week 8 Oct 12	Portfolio #2 Due (Critique) Lecture: Cross-hatching, Tonal rendering Studio: Crosshatch value scales Materials: bristol board, pencils, ruler, erasers, pen & ink.	Still Life: pen & ink cross-hatch (full class) Materials: drawing board, illustration board 15x10"(see paper cut), also "L" frame, pencils, erasers, pen & ink, drafting tape	Homework Download and read: John Montague. Basic Perspective Drawing: A Visual Approach. Part 1 D'Amelio. Perspective. On newsprint, using a ruler - draw and label horizon line (HL) and one vanishing point (VP). Draw 5 cubes in ONE-point perspective some above and some below the horizon line. (due Tuesday 10/19)
Week 9 Oct 19	Rendering Light: value scale / sphere See blog for links to artist examples. Materials: drawing board, bristol board, all pencils; erasers	Lecture: Perspective One Point Perspective: hallway Materials: drawing board, Drawing paper ; pencils, erasers ; 24" ruler	Homework Perspective/foreshortening: Draw your phone (or similar object) at just below eye level in one-point perspective. Measure height, width. Find center of object. Find horizon line and vanishing point. Include details and shading but leave all working lines, HL, VP. (graphite on bristol)
Week 10 Oct 26	Two Point Linear Perspective Materials: drawing board, Drawing paper ; pencils, erasers ; 24" ruler. Also bring the one-point perspective drawing from last week.	Multiple Perspectives and Rendering Light Materials: BRING 1 hard-bound book (for prop). Bristol Board; newsprint, all pencils, erasers, long ruler, tape Lecture: Self-portrat Photo-Shoot	Homework Portfolio #3 Due Tuesday Photo Shoot: self-portrait. Bring 2 identical copies. (4x6") Lighting: NO FLASH Single LIGHT SOURCE Bring photos to check 11/2. Must have photo prints IN CLASS 11/9. In Journal: copy an artist's work. See Drawing the Masters
Week 11 Nov 2	Portfolio #3 (critique) Photos due to be checked (can be on camera or computer) Lecture: Artist Copy, Museum assignment Flowerpots in contë Materials: contë (4colors), drawing paper, drawing board, erasers, and vine charcoal.	Individual Meetings Library research for Artist Copy assignment Museum Assignment	Homework: Artist Copy Use pencil, pastel or conte on drawing paper (18x24) to make a 5 hour, carefully rendered copy of a chosen painting or drawing. Drawing should be the same proportions as the original work (draw a frame) Due with Portfolio #4 Must have self portrait photo prints at beginning of class Tues 11/9 for full credit.
Week 12 Nov 9	Grid Self-Portrait Must have portrait photos (4x6") and all materials at the beginning of class for full credit. Materials: Photos, micro-tip sharpie, scissors, Drawing paper, tracing paper, vine charcoal, compressed charcoal, soft pastels (different colors, if you have), ruler, tape, and printed photos from photoshoot. Week 13 Nov 16	Tone: value study Materials: drawing paper, compressed charcoal (soft), chamois, kneeded eraser, tracing paper, drafting tape, "L" frame. Note: this is a long still life. Week 15 Nov 30	Tuesday I will not be in class. Look for an email from me. Students should use the time to work on the self-portrait from mirror, fill drawing journal, and do museum assignment (all due next week). Week 16 Dec 7 Top^	Portfolio #5 Due (Critique) All work must be turned in by beginning of class today. No drawings will be accepted after today. Caligraphic Drawing Materials: Brush, ink, water container, newsprint, drawing paper. Final Journal check: Museum Assignment sketches will be checked. Journals should be filled with any type of drawing in any medium.	Expressive Drawing Materials: All charcoal, pencils and pastels. Drawing paper (can use gray drawing paper) masking tape.
