Introduction/Objectives/Materials

Homework:
  • Purchase materials. Here is a printable materials list. Note: by next week students should have all materials available at all classes (check in room Art 125 about lockers)
  • Reading: Click here for readings You will need the login and password given in class. Once on the page, look for the #8: Kimon Nicolaides, The Natural Way to Draw.
  • Go to the Beginning Drawing Blog. Look under the Topics menu and click on Gesture drawing. Look through all three blogs about gesture.

  • Download reading #2. Jack Flam. Matisse on Art. Looking at life with the eyes of a child. 1953.
  • Journal work: Line exercises - "ready, aim, fire": 2 pages straight lines
  • Cut two L shapes from the illustration board. See diagram.

  • Download and read:
    • John Montague. Basic Perspective Drawing: A Visual Approach. Part 1
    • D'Amelio. Perspective.
  • On newsprint, using a ruler - draw and label horizon line (HL) and one vanishing point (VP). Draw 5 cubes in ONE-point perspective some above and some below the horizon line. (due Tuesday 10/19)

  • example of image to draw foreshortenedPerspective/foreshortening: Draw your phone (or similar object) at just below eye level in one-point perspective. Measure height, width. Find center of object. Find horizon line and vanishing point. Include details and shading but leave all working lines, HL, VP. (graphite on bristol)

  • Drawing should be the same proportions as the original work (draw a frame)

Must have self portrait photo prints at beginning of class Tues 11/9 for full credit.
