SYNOPSIS
The Promise is a three-act musical drama that takes place in Slovenia and Britain and spans the years 1933 to 1954. It is the story of a young Slovenian girl's adherence to her dying mother's request on the verge of World War II that she not divulge her Jewish ancestry, a promise to which she remains doggedly loyal. Joanna escapes the horrors of the Holocaust by fleeing to England just before war breaks out. In London, she volunteers as a nurse and ultimately completes nursing school. She meets and marries Edward, the son of an upper-class family, who builds a pioneering water-ski business. The family grows. One day Joanna's father comes to visit, bringing her mother's oldest friend, a Jewish woman who has survived a Nazi concentration camp, and who knows Joanna's secret.
