The Comanches

The language of the Comanches belongs to the Uto-Aztecan family that is associated with the western Rocky Mountains and the Great Basin areas. The Comanches were a Great Plains tribe before European contact. When horses were acquired by the Comanches and the other tribes the Comanches were displaced to the southern Great Plains where they came into conflict with the Apaches. From there they raided into Mexico. While the objective of the raids was booty such as horses, another objective was to gain glory in battle with individual combat.

Along the Comanche long resisted containment by the U.S. military they eventually were settled into Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) about 1870, along with their allies, the Kiowa and the Kiowa Apaches.
