Sentence Structure in Danish

The word order in Danish sentences is typically SUBJECT-VERB-OBJECT (SVO). For example, the sentence The girl lies there and sleeps is expressed in Danish as Pigen legger dér og sover . However if the sentence begins with some word or phrase that is not the subject then the subject comes after the verb. For example, Dér ligger pigen has the subject following the verb as in English There lies the girl. This is called inversion.
