It does this using functions which can be created using scripting languages. But in order for the scripting language functions to change the appearance of a web page there has to be a way of designating parts of the HTML code in the page. This done with the <SPAN> </SPAN> tags. with the <SPAN> tag an attribute allows the naming of the block of code appearing between the tags. This name for the block of code can be referenced in the script functions.
