Reality and Reproduction

We conclude the first half of class with an exploration of the shifting modes of image construction and reproduction. While the introduction of perspective evoked a modern sensibility to image spectatorship, we find that recent modern visualizations have largely dispensed with the goal of realism, shifting toward impressionism, surrealism, and irony. Ultimately, we find that reproducibility and editability replace the goal of uniqueness in pre-mechanical-age images, calling into question the very notion of authorship.
