Recent Happenings: Meeting with Fred Keeley, Meeting with Senator Bruce McPherson

Write to Sacramento!

In this time of economic hardship, it is most important to let our legislators know what we think is important. Budget cuts mean a loss of valuable programs, class size reduction and even our most valuable asset - teachers.

If you are concerned about these cuts and how they will affect our children's education and their future, write a letter to our district's Assemblyman and Senator. Let them know that we think cuts in education are unacceptable and that our votes for them rely on them making the right decision when it comes time to vote for the budget cuts.

Assemblyman Laird or Senator McPherson,

I recognize that crafting the State Budget is a complex and trying process of competing groups and priorities, especially this year when the State faces an unprecedented budget shortfall. However, education should be spared as much as possible, and should certainly be protected from drastic cuts as are proposed in the up-coming budget.

Unfortunately, the cuts that are proposed will hurt our district greatly. We will probably have a budget deficit of between $525,000 and $590,000. This will mean valuable programs, like the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program, that have proven beneficial to our students will be lost. It will also mean the loss of Art and Music programs, class-size reduction and worst of all, teachers, counselors and possibly even Assistant Principals. We have even changed graduation requirements, which means lowering our standards for our children and their future.

California school districts need more money to properly educate our children, not less. The education of our children is of utmost importance to the future of our state. These cuts will be devastating. However, you can make a difference by voting against these budget cuts and convincing others that these cuts will hurt California more than they will help.
