The 7 Steps to Financial Aid at SJSU

1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

  • Obtain a U.S. Department of Education PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. This PIN may serve as your electronic signature when completing your online FAFSA.
  • Apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov
  • The Priority Deadline for the FAFSA application is March 2nd annually.
  • SJSU Federal School Code: 001155

2. Student Receives Student Aid Report (SAR)

  • Once your FAFSA is processed by the Federal Studant Aid (FSA) you will be sent an email regarding your SAR.  If you do not provide an email on your FAFSA, a paper SAR will be mailed to the address provided.
  • The SAR restates the entries provided on the student’s FAFSA application. Read the SAR carefully and perform any corrections as necessary. You may make corrections to a processed FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
  • If corrections are made, please allow an additional 2 weeks for your FAFSA corrections to be processed, and for our office to receive your updated FAFSA data.
  • Your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) can be found at the top right of page 1 of the SAR.

3. SJSU Contacts Student Requesting Documents

  • When our office receives your FAFSA data, we will send you a message via MySJSU instructing you to complete and submit documents from your To Do list in MySJSU.
  • Navigate to MySJSU > Self Service > Student Center > “To Do List”
  • Make copies for your own file and make sure your SJSU ID number is listed on all documents.
  • Your award is based upon the completion of your SJSU Financial Aid file in a timely manner.  Do not delay!

4. Evaluation Process: 4 – 6 weeks

  • Once all requested documents are submitted to our office, the 4 – 6 week evaluation process will commence.
  • Your application status may change and/or additional documents may be requested from you. Check your “To Do’s” list in MySJSU often.

5. Award Notification & Fee Deferrals

  • When you have been awarded, an award message will be sent via  MySJSU .  No paper notices will be mailed.
  • You may view your Financial Aid Award online at MySJSU > Self Service > Student Center > Below "Finances" click on "View Financial Aid", then click on the appropriate aid year.
  • If you plan to be enrolled less than full-time , complete the Student Information Update Form . Financial aid funds may be prorated for students who are enrolled for less than full-time . Please note: Failure to return this form will delay your disbursement.
  • If you have been awarded a Federal Stafford Loan and wish to borrow funds, go to http://www.sjsu.edu/faso/typesofaid/loans/staffordloans/ and follow the outlined steps.
  • Fee deferrals are temporary and are issued once all requested documents are submitted to the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office.  To prevent enrollment cancellation, you must submit all requested documents prior to the payment deadline.  A fee deferral will hold classes and delay payment of registration fees only while the financial aid process is completed.  It is your responsibility to pay your academic costs if you apply for financial aid after the semsester has started. A fee deferral will not be issued.  Check MySJSU for your fee deferral status. If you no longer qualify for a fee deferral, it is your responsibility to pay your own fees to prevent the loss of your classes.

6. Disbursement of Funds

  • The disbursement of funds begins weekly, starting the week the semester begins.  Your financial aid funds will apply to your student account and pay any outstanding fees owed to the university.  The balance of funds (if any) will be either mailed to you or you can have the funds deposited into a checkling/savings account electronically.  click here for information regarding eRefunds .
  • The Bursar’s Office will mail your check to the mailing address indicated on MySJSU.
  • Financial aid is based on full-time enrollment, unless you have notified our office otherwise by completing the Student Information Update Form .
  • An Academic Progress Hold may be placed on your financial aid after semester grades have been posted if: you failed to complete required units, have been in school for too many years/units, or have become academically disqualified. You must submit a written Academic Progress Petition to the Financial Aid & Scholarship Office before you can receive your disbursement of funds.

7. Do Your Part!

  • Complete your semester units.
  • Maintain at least a 2.0 GPA as an undergraduate or 3.0 as a grduate, postbac or credential student every semester.
  • Make sure to update your contact information (mailing address, email, phone numbers) on MySJSU.
  • Check your “To Do’s” list often.
  • Keep your email current. Email and electronic messages are the preferred method of communication for our office. You can update your email by navigating to MySJSU
  • Consult with our office if you have any questions or problems during the semester.
  • Remember to file for financial aid every academic year.
