How Do I Apply for Financial Aid?

When Will I Receive my Financial Aid?

The first checks are issued the first week of classes. Federal Stafford loans are mailed after the funds arrive from the lender.

Will my Financial Aid Pay my Registration Fees?

Unpaid registration fees and most other debts are automatically deducted from your aid.  If your financial aid is not enough to pay your fees or other debts, you must pay the balance shown on your Customer Account.


How do I receive a Fee Deferral?

You are eligible to defer your fees if you have returned all requested documents to the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office, or you have received an Offer of Financial Aid with sufficient financial aid to pay your fees. If your Offer of Financial Aid is not sufficient to pay your fees, you must pay them yourself.

Fee deferrals are not issued once the semester begins.  Fee deferrals will expire two weeks into the semester.  You are responsible for paying your own fees at this point.


Will I Get Separate Checks or a Single Check?

A single check will be mailed for all funds that are ready for disbursement. Stafford loans are mailed after the funds arrive from the lender. Perkins and Kuhlman loans are mailed after a signed promissory note is received and the check is ready for disbursement.

Do I Have to be Full Time?

Yes. Unless you have requested and received prior approval from the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office. Full time is 12 units for undergraduate, teaching credential, and 2nd B.A./B.S. students. Full time for graduate students is eight units. Note that units taken at other colleges do not count. You can reuest a reduction of units by completing the Student Information Update Form .

What Financial Aid cover my on-campus housing costs?

University Housing fees are not automatically deducted from your financial aid unless you have made prior arrangement with University Housing Services. If your award does not cover all of your housing, you must pay the balance owed with your own funds.

Can I receive Financial Aid for the Winter session?

No, Financial Aid is not available for the Winter session.  You will be responsible for paying your own fees.

My Tax Return is Not Filed Yet - How do I Complete the FAFSA?

You can useestimated income. After you file your taxes you can update your FAFSA application.

Are there Emergency Loans Available?

Yes. Contact the Bursars Office (Cashier's Office) for further information.

What is the Difference Between a Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loan?

On a subsidized loan, the interest is paid by the federal government while the student is enrolled or in a grace period. For an unsubsidized loan, the student is responsible for the interest on the loan from the first disbursment of the loan.

What Do I Have to Do to Be Independent?

To be considered independent you must meet one of the following federal criteria:

  • You will reach age 24 by December 31 of the award year
  • You are a graduate student
  • You are a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces
  • You are married at the time you completed the application
  • You are a ward of the court or an orphan
  • You have legal dependents (other than a spouse) who receive more than half their support from you
