Federal Work-Study

Federal Work-Study(FWS) allows SJSU students to gain valuable work experience while they earn money to help pay for college. There are jobs available with on-campus employers such as Spartan Shops, the Housing Office, Student Union, Event Center, and various academic and administrative offices. There are also off-campus jobs with school districts, social service agencies, city and county government, etc. Participation in the Federal Work Study Program is limited to students who have work study as part of their financial aid award. Students normally request Federal Work Study on their FAFSA application when they apply for aid (see Applying for Financial Aid ). However, students who have financial aid awards with unmet need can request a work study award. Note that the minimum work study award is $4,000.

One of the advantages of the Federal Work Study program is that your earnings are excluded when you reapply for financial aid. Thus, FWS earnings do not affect future financial aid eligibility. However, FWS earnings are taxable.

You must have an Federal Work Study award and be enrolled as a current student at SJSU to use the online FWS Job Search Service.

Finding a Federal Work-Study job:

  • Browse current Federal Work-Study job listings on the SJSU Career Center Website.
  • Locate advertised Federal Work Study jobs (via the internet or hard-copy job listings)
  • Call the specified employers and schedule a job interview.
  • Print your Financial Aid Award Notice from MySJSU and bring it with you to each job interview. You can print your award notice by accessing:
MySJSU > Self Service > Student Center > under Finances click on "View Financial Aid" > click on the 2008 aid year

Eligibility does not guarantee employment. Actual employment is contingent upon availability of jobs, skill level, work hours, etc. Students unable to find employment through the Work-Study program are recommended to contact the SJSU Career Center for other jobs both on and off campus.

Students who need internet access on campus can go to the Career Center in Modular Building F (adjacent to the Boccardo Business Building)
