Campus Grounds : South Campus
The South Campus is located 1.6 miles south of the Main campus along 10 th street . It is comprised of 50 acres of athletic fields, training rooms, locker rooms, Athletic department offices, and Spartan Stadium. It also includes a 10 acre Park & Ride lot that provides parking and shuttle services for students, staff, and faculty.
The Stadium was built in the 1930's and expanded to its present capacity of 30,000 in the 1980's. The San José State Spartan football, and men's and women's soccer teams play their home games there. In addition, the Stadium hosts High School Football and the University Commencement Ceremony.
During the Winter and Spring of 2009, the natural turf was removed and replaced with Field Turf, a new generation of artificial turf, with a crumb rubber and sand infill. This has resulted in significant savings to the University in water use, fertilizer and seed. This project was completed in time for the May 2009 University Commencement Ceremony.
The University Commencement ceremony is held in Spartan Stadium every year on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. With 4,000 graduates and faculty on the stadium floor and 20,000 friends and family in the stands it is a good idea to arrive early for the 9:30am - 11:30am event.
In addition to practice fields for football and Men's and Women's soccer, there are also game day fields for the Spartan Baseball team and the Lady Spartan Softball team. Other fields provide a venue for intramural sports and for Human Performance classes.
