Programs :: Think Clean & GreenThe Think Clean & Green concept was initiated during early 2001
to incorporate several loosely affiliated processes at SJSU sharing
a common goal of environmental conservation and beautification under
one umbrella. The following is a partial list of these processes:
University Advancement developed an attractive logo and graphics conveying the meaning of the campaign. Initially, we promoted the campaign in conventional ways using outreach materials like posters, stickers, and buttons. The campaign attracted wider attention and publicity in mid 2001 when we installed several "stay off the grass" signs, hand painted by sixth graders from a local school, on campus lawns. The signs worked and the paths across several lawns disappeared! Following the successful response to these signs, the next semester we installed similar signs promoting our campus recycling programs. To further the Think Clean & Green campaign, we have been installing various posters promoting waste reduction on campus. These attractive posters were designed and donated by the State Department of conservation with various themes like Peace sign made with cans & bottles, the Can-crusher poster, when cans dream, etc. These posters are posted campus-wide on the bulletin boards outside offices and in classrooms. Every semester we change these posters with a new design to continue promoting our programs. We are currently exploring an idea to create our own posters using recognizable campus "characters" to promote our Think Clean & Green message. The current project under this campaign is our new MiniBin Recycling program. The MiniBin program has been widely adopted by several Universities and local governments around the country including the City of San Jose . We have successfully implemented the MiniBin program in most of the administrative areas and the new library on campus. By the end of next year, we are planning to convert the entire campus to the MiniBin program. The City has generously donated several hundred gallon size trashcans and recycling boxes for the program. Other programs associated with this campaign are: promotional and educational programs for energy and water conservation, clean air vehicles (e.g new Ford Think electric vehicles), alternative transportation (e.g. bicycle facilities), and the most recent America Recycles Day project. The Think Clean & Green campaign creates a link between several programs and processes on campus otherwise seemingly unrelated and identifies SJSU as an environmentally responsible entity within the community.
