The Yellow Wallpaper
The Yellow Wallpaper - 2015 Summer short film
Based on the 1892 short story of the same name by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, The Yellow Wallpaper is a short film about a young woman named Eleanor who struggles with post-partum
depression. However, when Eleanor's over-protective husband refuses to recognize her
illness, he locks her in a room in their new Victorian mansion. Slowly, Eleanor loses
sight of her sanity, and the patterns in the yellow wallpaper begin to come to life.
The Yellow Wallpaper is an old story and it has been adapted for film and stage many times. However, our approach is different because unlike other adaptations, our film will not over-emphasize the horror and thriller elements as a means of down-playing the crucial message of female subjugation. We have adapted the story to the 1950s era because we felt the story would be more relatable if it took place closer to the present day. While the horror and thriller themes will still be prominently featured in our adaptation, our goal is to bring the original message back to the forefront as it was intended by the author.
