The Form I-9 process, also known as the Employment Eligibility Verification Procedure, was part of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. Its purpose is to avoid the employment of individuals who are not authorized to accept employment in the U.S.
To comply with the law, an employer must verify the identity and employment eligibility of all persons hired after November 6, 1986 who perform labor or services in return for wages or other remuneration. Human Resources is responsible for the verification and retention of all Form I-9 information according to federal guidelines. Only, after a position has been offered, can verification of an individual's identity and work eligibility be made. Verification must be completed on or before the first date of employment for SJSU.
