Translation Services

and Translation Verification Services

The Department of Foreign Languages is a translation and verification center for several languages. Our services are frequently requested and you may be assured that we have extensive experience. We translate and verify documents in languages we currently teach. Our faculty members and advanced graduate students translate your academic documents.

We teach and translate these languages:

  • Chinese
  • French
  • German
  • Greek
  • Hebrew
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Latin
  • Portuguese
  • Punjabi
  • Spanish
  • Vietnamese  

Many of our translators are multi-lingual and although we may not teach a certain language, we may be able to provide services for additional languages. These translations will be handled on a “case by case” basis.

Complete Translations

A complete word-by-word translation is requested when only an original document is available and you need it completely translated into English.
Depending on the size of the document, the process will generally take 5-15 business days. This time, however, may vary depending on document size and the translator’s schedule.
During the Summer and Winter semesters, the timeline will increase as translators are not always available. We will be discuss the timeline with you at the start of your transaction.

Processing Translations

Bring the original documents on your initial visit to our offices, it will be copied and immediately returned. Every word and mark will be translated, your documents will be formatted mirror-to-mirror* and it will be sealed with an official DFL seal.

*A mirror-to-mirror translation has every letter and mark on the original document, including logo and stamp spaceholders, formatted exactly the same.

Translations Costs

The cost of a complete translation is .30 cents per word with a $35.00 minimum charge. We ask that you leave a cash deposit for at least half of the anticipated translation cost, the minimum deposit is $20.00.

Payment of the remaining balance is due in cash at the time you pick up of your documents. You will receive a cover letter and one set of sealed documents (the translation and the original). Additional sets can be purchased for $5.00 each.

Translation Verifications

A translation verifictions is requested when an orignal document has already been translated and needs to be SJSU verified and sealed. During the academic year, the process will generally take 5-15 business days.

During the Summer and Winter semesters, the timeline may increase. We will be discuss the timeline with you at the start of your transaction.

Processing Translation Verifications

Bring the original document and a copy of your English mirror-to-mirror* translation of the original document on your initial visit to our offices, it will be copied and immediately returned. You must then follow up by emailing an editable electronic file for our use. The translator will verify your translation and it will sealed with an official DFL seal.

If you can not supply the electronic version, we can retype the entire document for you, the charge is the same as word-by-word translation (.30 cents per word). If you retype it yourself, you will save on costs and time.

Translation Verifications Costs

The cost of a translation verification is $35 for up to three pages and $5 per additional page. Please note, that if there are many corrections to make on your translation, we reserve the right to return the document unverified. However, you may opt to have your document retranslated, the additional fees will be .30 cents per word. We ask that you leave a cash deposit for at least half of the anticipated translation verification cost, the minimum deposit is $20.00.
