Health & Safety
Student safety while abroad is of primary importance when developing and running Faculty-Led Programs. Global Education and Initiatives continuously monitors our program locations to ensure they are safe for our students. All program leaders receive extensive safety and security training, and our office is available 24/7 while they are abroad in case of emergency. Our program participants are also enrolled in the U.S. State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which allows the State Department to contact participants in case of emergency.
You can find more detailed information on countries around the world on the U.S. State Department's website.
Health Insurance for Faculty-Led Program Participants
All participants on Faculty-Led Programs are enrolled in an international health insurance plan for the dates of their program. The cost of this insurance is included in the total program cost, and covers illnesses, medical emergencies, and medical/security evacuation. Prior to their program, students receive an email from the insurance company with insurance enrollment confirmation, their ID card, and an insurance brochure detailing their benefits.
If a student is planning to travel independently before or after their program, they
will need to arrange additional insurance coverage on their own.
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention
We encourage all participants to be familiar with the CDC page, especially the page on traveler's health. The CDC provides up-to-date country-specific health information, which will be very
helpful in preparation of overseas travel.
SJSU Wellness Center
Our on-campus wellness center provides travel care consultations and services for students to minimize and prevent risks of illness and accidents while abroad. Services include: country-specific travel packet regarding food/water/insect precautions/health and safety, several travel vaccines and/or prescriptions if needed. More information about this service can be found here and we recommend that you call the appointment desk at (408) 924-6122 to inquire about this service.
