NURS 180 Individual Studies (2 units)

This course will allow students to study and experience the history, culture, health beliefs, and healthcare specific to maternal-child health of this developing country. It will enable participants to build on prior knowledge and influence their understanding of culture's influence on providing nursing care.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Evaluate health and health care disparities related to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and disparities of vulnerable populations, including maternal and child care, and socioeconomically disadvantaged populations
  • Evaluate and explore aspects of health literacy in nursing care
  • Summarize major maternal-child health issues and most significant diseases, including their causes, symptoms, treatment, prevention, and associated risk factors in India.
  • Investigate and analyze maternal-child healthcare issues, phenomena, considering end their effect on the individuals, communities, and social or natural environments involved
  • Collaboration and engagement with local students and/or health professionals, including discussions and debriefing with faculty and peers
